Ruth Ann Udstad, the daughter of an insurance salesman and a kindergarten teacher, was born on February 5, 1927 in New Orleans. Together with husband Rodney, Ruth opened a racing stable in Baton Rouge and earned a thoroughbred trainer�s license, making her the first female horse trainer in Louisiana.
